Wahoo receives $576K for Wanahoo Trail

The City of Wahoo received notification from the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission January15, 2015 that the Lake Wanahoo Trail Phase II Project had been approved for funding through the Recreational Trails Program. The grant application was submitted in September, a presentation was made in November to the recommending Trail Committee, and the Game and Parks Commission approved the project for funding at their meeting on January 15, 2015. The Lake Wanahoo Trail Phase II Project will provide a 10' wide crushed limestone trail connection from the north edge of Wahoo near Cook's Park, where a current trail ends, to the box culvert installed under Hwy 77/92 across Lake Wanahoo.  Total project cost is estimated at $719,685, with $575,728 (80% of total project cost) coming from the Recreational Trails Program through the Nebraska Game and Parks.  The remaining balance of $143,957 (25% of total project cost) will come from the City of Wahoo and the Wahoo Community Foundation.

The City of Wahoo would like to thank all the supporters of this project that took the time to submit letters, emails, and comment forms indicating why they felt this project would be good for Wahoo.  The application included almost 100 pages of support, which is extremely unsual for grant application. In addition, a video prepared by a Wahoo High School P.E. class, was submitted for the Trail Committee to see.  The video can be viewed on YouTube by clicking on this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxMfJdT7gOs#action=share

Construction is anticipated for 2016.
