City of Wahoo to Host Drinking Water Protection Public Open House on February 24th
The City of Wahoo to hold an open house discussing the progress of its efforts to protect the city’s water supply. Actions include development of a Wellhead Protection Plan, well decommissioning, and establishment of a Wellhead Protection Overlay Zone.

As part of the Wahoo Source Water Protection Project, the City of Wahoo Department of Utilities (DOU) is seeking property owners that own abandoned wells and are willing to allow the city to assist with decommissioning to help protect the city’s drinking water supply. Those who are interested are encouraged to contact the DOU by April 30, 2022. This action is part of the DOU’s effort to establish a Wellhead Protection (WHP) Plan to guide the city on how to best protect drinking water for the long term. The intent of the WHP Plan is to fully understand the underground source of water, identify potential contaminants, and establish contaminant management strategies.
The DOU, with support from the Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy (NDEE) and Lower Platte North Natural Resources District, is currently offering 100% of the cost of most well closures within a two-mile area around the WHP area, which illustrates the area of land above the aquifer where the city draws its drinking water (featured in the map below).
